A Statement from Functionally Speaking ABA
Standing with Somali Communities
As a native Minnesotan, I’ve built close, interpersonal relationships with the Somali community. Having mentored Somali RBTs, BCBAs, and serviced the loving families of Somali children with disabilities, I am deeply perturbed by the Presidents recent statement.
The United States was built on the foundation of immigrant families and enslaved African labor. Our nation is a mosaic in which there is not one central religion, language, ethnicity, or race that is “acceptable” or “the best”. Yet, our citizens were labeled as “garbage” and adhered to the actions of one person.
As a Christian, I (and other Christians alike) am called to love my neighbors (our neighbors). This includes rejecting xenophobia and religious persecution in all forms. In my country, my streets, and my social media platforms, there is no place for this belligerence. I am proud to be an American citizen, and I am proud to live amongst the hard-working Somalis and Somali Americans who contribute to our society.
To my Somali colleagues who
Treat all clients as equals.
Show unwavering compassion for individuals with disabilities
See the potential in every child, regardless of their challenges
Dedicate your lives to servitude in the face of bigotry in your workplace
Advocate for our clients who withstand the same hostility
Offer your time and talents without fair compensation to ensure every family's voice is heard
Wear a smile, no matter the circumstances.
God Bless You ❤️

Samira Ahmed is a wonderful BCBA, mentee, and friend 💛
While a few states away, I’m reminded daily of her compassion and dedication to culturally responsive & high-quality care. As an advocate for inclusive and effective interventions, Samira leaves an incredible impact wherever she goes.
